The left, right, top and bottom halves, the four corners, the center, and maximize or restore. No dragging, no snap zones.

Press again to resize

Repeating a shortcut steps through 1/2, 2/3 and 3/4 of the screen by default, or any mix of 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 and 3/4.

CtrlAltWin→

Every monitor

Move a window to the next or previous display with a shortcut.

Sizes use the window's visible frame, so snapped windows meet edge to edge, without the gap Windows' invisible resize border leaves.

Takes over busy shortcuts

When Windows or another app already owns a chord, Wrecktangle takes it over instead of giving up, and Settings names the app it overrides.

Wrecktangle

Wrecktangle 0.4.0 is available. Click to download.

Tells you about updates

It checks GitHub once a day or on demand, and a notification links to the new installer. It never installs anything by itself.

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Wrecktangle

No admin rights

It installs for your user only and never asks for administrator rights.

Lives in the tray

Opening it again while it runs brings up Settings instead of a second copy.

A Settings window that feels like Windows 11

Fluent design that follows your light or dark theme, in the Windows blue or Wrecktangle's own yellow. Change any shortcut, the size cycle or launch at startup, and every change applies as you make it.

Try Language in the General tab: it switches this whole page too.

Wrecktangle Settings

Click a shortcut to record a new one. Repeat a shortcut to cycle through sizes. Changes apply right away.

Up and running in a minute

  1. Download and run the installer

It installs for your user only, into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Wrecktangle, and never asks for admin rights. It isn't code signed yet, so if Windows SmartScreen says it protected your PC, click More info, then Run anyway.

  2. Tick Launch at startup

Wrecktangle then starts every time you sign in, and runs from the tray.

  3. Press CtrlAlt←

The focused window fills the left half of its screen. Press it again for two thirds, and again for three quarters.

Prefer no installer? Take the portable zip, put wrecktangle.exe somewhere permanent, run it from there and turn on Launch at startup from the tray menu.

You need Windows 10 or 11, 32-bit or 64-bit. Windows 11 is always 64-bit. Uninstall it from Apps in Windows Settings.

Questions, answered

Is Wrecktangle free?

Yes. Download it and use it, with no account and no trial.

Why does Windows say it protected my PC?

Wrecktangle isn't code signed yet, so SmartScreen doesn't recognize it. Click More info, then Run anyway.

Why can't it move some windows?

A window that runs as administrator can't be moved by a Wrecktangle that doesn't, because of a Windows security boundary called UIPI. Wrecktangle detects this up front and shows a one-time notification instead of failing silently.

A shortcut already does something else. What happens?

Wrecktangle takes the chord over, and Settings names the app it overrides. Win+L and Ctrl+Alt+Del are handled by Windows and can't be taken over. A few defaults overlap with other apps: Magnifier while it runs, VS Code (Ctrl+Alt+↑/↓ add cursors) and JetBrains IDEs (Ctrl+Alt+←/→ go back and forward). Change any of them in Settings.

My keyboard layout has an AltGr key.

On layouts like US-International, Ctrl+Alt+key is the same chord as AltGr+key, so a shortcut assigned that way can block typing that key's AltGr character. Settings flags any shortcut that does this.

How do updates work?

Wrecktangle looks for a new release 30 seconds after it starts, if a day has passed since the last check, and then once a day. A notification links to the new installer, which downloads in your browser. It never installs anything by itself, and you can turn the check off in Settings.

Is this Rectangle for Windows?

It's inspired by Rectangle, the macOS window manager by Ryan Hanson. Wrecktangle is an independent Windows app, not affiliated with Rectangle.

I used Wectangle. What now?

Wrecktangle used to be called Wectangle. On its first start it closes a running Wectangle, copies your settings and moves the Launch at startup entry to the new app. You can delete the old wectangle.exe and the %APPDATA%\Wectangle folder afterwards.

How do I uninstall it?

From Apps in Windows Settings. With the portable zip, turn off Launch at startup in the tray menu, quit Wrecktangle and delete the exe.
